You have come to the right place if you are reading this. This page is dedicated to helping provide answers to common questions and you point you in the right direction if the answer is not here.

Humber 3D Forum: There is a private forum for use by students. At Humber College we want to provide you with an on line community where you can share ideas and information as well as get to know the other students. We encourage students from all semesters to collaborate and share ideas. This makes all the students stronger. Remember that other students at Humber are not your competition but your resource. This industry works on word of mouth and those that know others will be stronger for it. Help one another get started in an industry that can provide you with world travel, access to the most talented artists on the planet and a life time of enjoying what you do.

It is required that you create and account and use the forum for communications with faculty and other students. More information about the forum can be found here. If I have a major problem that isn't answered here who do I ask?
* If the problem is not about specific class issues and needs to be addressed you can contact the course coordinator. For information about faculty and administration please visit the faculty page.

Plagiarism:
What does it mean?

"Plagiarism (from Latin plagiare "to kidnap") is the practice of claiming, or implying, original authorship or incorporating material from someone else's written or creative work, in whole or in part, into one's own without adequate acknowledgement. "

Quoted from: Wikipedia

What is Plagiarism and what isn't it?

  • Plagiarism is the act of claiming owner ship of some one else's work. In this business there is a fine line of what is plagiarism and what is reference. We are always referencing others work and trying to mimic the look that they have achieved. This isn't plagiarism, it is reference as we have not taken their work and claimed it as our own.
  • Consider that all movies, television, games and others are created by many people and some times many companies the work is never truly one persons. For this reason there are credits that list every one that was involved and what they did. For your own work as a student you can do the same. If you have modeled a character but some one else did the design make sure that is clear when the piece is shown. This is working collaboratively. If you don't list the person that did the design it will be assumed that you have, at this point you have not plagiarized the design.
  • A case that we see all the time that is border line is when you reference something like a game design. The designed piece is yours but the over all look is very very similar to the game that you used as reference. It might be wise to list in the credits that you were inspired by, and referenced the game. This way people don't think that you are trying to pull the wool over their eyes and are trying to make them believe that it was all your idea.

What happens if you are caught plagiarizing material at Humber?

  • Humber takes this very seriously and the consequences will reflect this.
  • Consider how you would feel if you found work of yours in some one else's portfolio and they managed to get the job that you wanted.
  • In short, plagiarism is not tolerated.
  • If you are not sure that what you are planning is plagiarism or not then you need to ask your faculty first before you proceed.

What is the forum used for?

  • Asking for help on class or software specific questions.
  • Post 2D, 3D tradition or any other art work whether related to Humber classes or not for critique and comments.
  • Reading about up and coming events for Humber3D students.

What forum do I post my questions or art work in?

  • There are many forums to choose from so please make sure that you post your questions and work in the correct ones. If threads are started in the wrong forum they may get moved to the correct one by an administrator or moderator.
  • All questions pertaining to software must be placed in the software specific forums and not in a class specific forum. This will make it easier for other students to find answers to questions that have already been asked.
  • All art work for critique needs to be placed in either the 3D Wips and Completed Images for Critique or 2D Wips and Completed Images for Critique forums. Do not place your images in the class specific forums unless advised by your faculty or are asking a question about the image as it pertains to the specific class.
  • Questions about class specific topics like when is something due or how should it be handed in can be asked in the class specific forums. If no forum exists for your class please inform Paul Neale and I will add it.

I'm a new student and my work isn't very good, should I post it on the forum?

  • The whole point of the forums is to make you better at what you do. Having your art work critiqued from the first day you arrive will help you evolve as a student and a 3D artist.
  • All the work that you will ever do in the 3D animation and arts business will be critiqued by professionals that are not worried about hurting your feelings. You may as well get started with having your work critiqued by others as soon as you can.
